MY APPROACH

Shiatsu has evolved to include many different approaches and styles alongside the traditional methods of treatment and diagnosis. During my initial training I was introduced to the work of Saul Goodman and have continued to develop my skills in Saul’s pioneering Shin Tai approach which places particular emphasis on the spine and the hara (stomach). These two fundamental areas are the physical manifestations of the Governing Vessel and Conception Vessel meridians which themselves are the primary directors of all the other meridians and our own innate healing ability. Using Shin Tai, traditional shiatsu and western soft tissue manipulation I will use the most appropriate treatment and techniques for each individual even if two people’s symptoms appear the same. This enables me to rebalance the chi both emotionally and physically and ultimately treat the person rather than the condition.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM A TREATMENT

Shiatsu and Shin Tai are given through clothes, so it is best to wear a t-shirt or long-sleeved top and comfortable jogging-type trousers or leggings. The treatment usually takes place on the floor on a comfortable padded mattress called a futon and you will be supported by a body cushion however, each session can be adapted to a massage couch or a chair as necessary, according to your condition. A full consultation will be taken to ensure the approach and techniques are appropriate. Depending on the treatment, the session may include postural assessment and soft tissue structural alignment, joint mobilisations, fascial release and meridian rebalancing, all of which can be very gentle, dynamic or a combination of both, tailored appropriately to you as an individual. The overriding principle is that shiatsu pressure is deep but sensitive and has a comforting and restorative quality. Where it is suitable, I may use the traditional Japanese art of hara (stomach) massage called ampuku and as I hold a Level 5 Diploma in Soft Tissue Therapy (LSSM) I may also apply these skills in relation to a more physical presentation such as a sports injury. Following each session, appropriate aftercare and advice will be discussed to enable you to participate fully in your own recovery and ongoing well-being.

What do people say?

“I have had a problem with my back for years. I’ve tried Physio, Osteopathy, chiropractors, even acupuncture. Nothing seemed to get to the problem.

After a few sessions with Karen she suggested I try Shiatsu Massage and I thought why not I’ve tried everything else.

Within a few appointments Mick had sorted me out. I do have to return now and again but only if I have been on holiday, the plane journey and a soft bed really set it off again, but Mick always comes to the rescue.

A couple of treatments and I’m back to normal.”

“Mick, I have been very pleased with the excellent treatments I've received from you over the last few months.

The shiatsu has helped ease neck and joint pain.

Also you have taken time to understand what is needed.

I would certainly recommend you to anyone suffering from joint and muscle problems! Kind regards."

"Mick has been amazing for me.

I realised once I had been to him 3 or 4 times my hips had never been aligned - Mick aligns you from the feet up, and ALL my pain appeared to be coming from that misalignment.

I have had chiropractors and osteopaths as well as massage etc and the pain always returns!!

After a year or two of seeing mick on regular basis, I am now seeing him about every 3 months and it basically keeps me pain free, obviously it’s taken a little while to come good

But seriously I have no pain and I’m 70 next year.

Mick is gentle, caring, punctual and gets the job done!!”
